Helpful Hints when packing:
Use one large duffle bag and one medium size carry on back pack plus your gun case or bow. All your gear should fit in the duffle bag. Using suite cases are not recommended.
Camp
Hunting Alberta’s north requires a camp to accommodate any condition that may occur. We use 12x14 wall tents with air tight wood stoves to keep warm and dry during the hunt.
The cook tent is run by a generator and gas stove where awesome meals are cooked daily. The shower is enclosed and heated; the washroom facilities are sheltered and clean. Staying as comfortable as possible is a priority to us, keeping the camp small allows us to offer a great Black Bear hunt.
Important Information
Make sure all weapons are properly set up before the hunt to minimize any problems that may arise. Contact us in person to insure your bring a large enough caliber rifle or bow set up. We will be happy to assist you in any way.
Attention Gun Hunters:
When hunting black bear over bait, shots are 20 to 40 yards max. So it is very important that you set up your rifle accordingly:
- Use all lead bullets that are really slow out of the muzzle and are consistent.
- By slowing the bullet down it is allows it to mushroom properly at close range.
- Most big calibers do very little damage at close range if using a fast load.
- When using a scope make sure you can properly focus at close range. Using high power scopes tend not to work well in the bush,
- I recommend using a good quality 3x9 scope that gathers good light and performs well at close range.
- Being confident with your setup is very important. Please call ahead of the hunt and I will be happy to answer any questions to help you prepare for the hunt.
Winning Bait Program
Burnt Lake Outfitters uses over 15,000 lbs of bait and special lures. This type of baiting creates competition at the baits allowing for multiple bears at each site.
Method of hunting
All bow hunts are conducted by using tree stands, ladder stands over prime baits. By using portable stands instead of permanent stands allows us to properly set up the bow hunter. Larger bears tend to need more confidence to come to the bait so the set up is very important. Rifle, muzzle loader and cross bow hunter’s experience the same set ups but at 40-60 yard shots.
Rifle/ Muzzle Loader/ Cross Bow/ Bow
With Burnt Lake Outfitters offering two bears and a wolf during your hunt you can enjoy hunting with any weapon of choice or any combo of the four. Example: If you take your first bear with a rifle you can take your second bear with a bow, muzzle loader or crossbow or continue hunting with your rifle. These options make for a great hunt.
